In our last post, we identified five of the top ten lesser-known United States boating destinations offering convenient and friendly waters to pleasure boaters, sailors, and cruisers. We now continue our series by describing five additional boating destinations you may want to add to your cruising or boating itinerary.
Indian River, DE:
One of the most common words used by boaters in Delaware is “fishing.” Charter boats are lined up at marinas on the Indian River to take anglers into the ocean for everything from flounder to marlin. Besides fishing from a boat, many anglers line both sides of the inlet along the rock pile or the jetties leading out into the ocean, casting and retrieving on the surface.
Caddo Lake, LA:
Caddo Lake holds the record as the largest natural freshwater lake in the South and the largest Cypress forest in the world and an incredible destination for pleasure boaters. This expansive lake covers more than 26,000 acres on the Texas and Louisiana border. Caddo gives the appearance of two waterways: open waters on the Louisiana side, and a primeval maze of jungle-like vegetation draped in Spanish moss on the Texas side. It has no horsepower limit, but limited depth and hazards on the Texas side require navigation by small boats and motors. However, the Louisiana side supports nearly any size of boat.
Wynooche Lake, WA:
The scenery at this Washington boating destination lives up to the hype, with views to the northeast of fabled Hurricane Ridge, and large rolling hills encompassing the perimeter. There are two major surprises in this area: a boat ramp in great shape and water temps hovering around 70 degrees.
Leech Lake, MN:
Leech is literally seven lakes in one. More than 100 years ago, a federal dam pooled a collection of glacier-dug lakes together to form Leech Lake. As a result, this boating destination has “about every habitat you could want, from well-vegetated bays to shallow rock bars to deep-water humps,” says Pat Rivers, large lake specialist for the state Department of Natural Resources.
Harbor Springs, MI:
The water itself looks as fresh as filtered water. Harbor Springs is surrounding by rich forest and nearby dunes, with a view of the Little Traverse Light in sight.
