While Zac Efron was filming the movie Charlie St. Cloud, he had to learn how to actually helm a boat to perform the role of the title character. His experience was his first introduction to sailing, and, like many of us, he fell in love. He now plans sail the world when he “gets older.”
Zac’s story got us thinking about how we each were introduced to sailing and the impact it has made on our lives, even changing the direction of our life’s ambition. Please tell us your introduction to sailing story by clicking in the comments section below.

On Saturday, the Volvo Ocean Race opened its new Race Control Center, a high-tech hub inspired by the NASA space control center. At the start of the Volvo Ocean Race next year, crews will work round the clock to constantly monitor the fleet, the changing weather conditions, and to share racing stories, via satellite, with fans across the world, both online and through other media sources.
The Volvo Ocean Race is the most intense and challenging long-distance race spanning across the world over a period nine months. It is held every three years, typically kicking off in September or October. The most recent route in 2008-2009 spanned nearly 39,000 nautical miles and reached a cumulative audience of 2 billion worldwide.
